INDEPENDENT POLL SHOWS BOB DOLE MAINTAINS IOWA CAUCUS LEAD

"Iowa Project -1996" shows Malcolm "Steve" Forbes Jr. big winner, Phil Gramm big loser: Powell 4:1 favorite as VP choice

Alexandria, Va --First time Republican presidential candidate Malcolm "Steve" Forbes Jr. came out of nowhere to statistically tie Phil Gramm and Pat Buchanan for runner-up status in the Iowa Caucuses. That according to an independent survey conducted by PSI of Alexandria, Virginia, that was released tonight by Capital Communications on television stations WOI, Ames, Iowa, KCAU, Sioux City, Iowa and WHBF in Davenport, Iowa.

The results of the survey are the fith stage of "The Iowa Project -1996", conducted by PSI, which is surveying likely caucus attendees periodically up to the February, 1996, Iowa presidential caucuses. This evenings release is the fith in that series. The first was released February 2, 1995.

"Bob Dole is still the person to beat," said PSI president and project director Craig Tufty. "He has successfully held onto 36.4 % of the likely caucus attendees since his almost identical showing of 36% in the 8/21/95 survey. He polled 36% in the first "Iowa Project -1996" survey on 2/2/95. Phil Gramm was the big loser dropping 6 points from 13.7% (8/21/95) to 7.7%. Because Pete Wilson and Colin Powell decided not to run for the Republican presidential nomination they were pulled from the 11/8/95 survey. All of the other candidates benefited from the departure of Wilson and Powell. Malcolm "Steve" Forbes Jr. receiving the largest boost of 7.6%. Buchanan .2%, Specter .4%, Alexander .4%, Taylor 1.4%, Lugar 1.4%, Dornan 1.6%, Gingrich 1.7% and Keyes 1.9%."

Of the 300 likely caucus attendees who were polled, 14.7% indicated that they would like to see Colin Powell as the Republican Vice Presidential candidate. Malcomb "Steve" Forbes Jr. was a distant second at 4%.

The PSI survey of 300 likely caucus attendees, conducted on 11/8/95, showed the Republican candidates standing as follows:
