The results of the survey are the third stage of “The Iowa Project - 1996”, conducted by PSI, which is surveying likely Republican caucus attendees periodically up to the February, 1996, Iowa presidential caucuses. This evenings release is the third in that series. The first two survey results were released on 2/2/95 & 4/4/95.
“ Bob Dole just keeps getting stronger,” said PSI president and project director Craig Tufty. “He has again increased his lead from his 50.6% showing in March of 1995. Barring a major defining event, it appears that the Republican presidential race for first place in the state of Iowa may very well be over. Gramm, a very distant second, holds a 2 to 1 lead over Pat Buchanan & undeclared candidate Colin Powell, while Wilson, Specter, Dornan, Alexander, Keyes, Lugar and Thompson continue to register in the low single digits.”
The PSI survey of 300 likely caucus attendees, conducted on 5/31/95 and 6/1/95, showed the Republican candidates standing as follows:
| Robert Dole | 51.7% |
| Phil Gramm | 11.7% |
| Pat Buchanan | 5.0% |
| Pete Wilson | 1.3% |
| Colin Powell | 5.0% |
| Arlen Specter | .7% |
| Robert Dornan | 2.6% |
| Lamar Alexander | 1.0% |
| Alan Keyes | .3% |
| Richard Lugar | 1.7% |
| Tommy Thompson | .3% |
| Undecided / Pushed | 3.3% |
| Undecided | 18.7% |
| Total: | 100.0% |
