The results of the survey are the sixth stage of "The Iowa Project -1996", conducted by PSI, which is surveying likely caucus attendees periodically up to the February 12, 1996, Iowa presidential caucuses. This evenings release is the sixth and final in that series. The first survey results were released February 2, 1995.
"Steve Forbes is the story in Iowa today," said PSI president and project director Craig Tufty. "He has broken away from the pack and is seriously threatening Bob Dole for the lead in the Iowa Caucuses. He polled 7.6% in the first "Iowa Project -1996" survey that tested him in early November of 1995. The most recent survey has him at 17.6%, only 8 points behind Bob Dole, who until Forbes entered the race enjoyed double digit leads all the way through the survey series. Left in the pack to sort out third place were Gramm, 7.4%, Buchanan, 7.0%, Alexander, 7.0%, Keyes, 5.7%, Lugar, 3.0%, Taylor, 2.0% and Dornan at 1.3%." The PSI survey of 300 likely caucus attendees, conducted on 1/22/96, showed the Republican candidates standing as follows:
| Robert Dole | 25.7% |
| Malcolm "Steve" Forbes Jr. | 17.6% |
| Phil Gramm | 7.4% |
| Pat Buchanan | 7.0% |
| Lamar Alexander | 7.0% |
| Alan Keyes | 5.7% |
| Richard Lugar | 3.0% |
| Maurice (Morry) Taylor | 2.0% |
| Robert Dornan | 1.3% |
| Undecided / Pushed | 19.3% |
| Undecided | 23.3% |
| Total: | 100.0% |
