The results of the survey are the fourth stage of "The Iowa Project -1996", conducted by PSI, which is surveying likely caucus attendees periodically up to the February, 1996, Iowa presidential caucuses. This evenings release is the fourth in that series. The first was released February 2, 1995.
"Bob Dole is still the person to beat," said president and project director Craig Tufty. "But his lead has eroded substantially from his 51.7% showing in the June survey. Lamar Alexander, Pat Buchanan, Alan Keyes, Phil Gramm and Arlen Specter seem to have benefited most from Dole's stall in the state of Iowa, while Richard Lugar, Colin Powell and Robert Dornan all lost ground. Newcomer Maurice (Morry) Taylor barely registered with .3% as House Speaker Newt Gingrich, not tested since the initial survey in January, managed 1.3%. Dole's loss from the June survey was just under 16%."
