Alexandria, Va --Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole maintains a commanding lead over all other Republican presidential candidates a little less than a year out from the February 1996 Iowa Caucuses. That according to an independent survey conducted by PSI of Alexandria, Virginia, that was released tonight by Capital Communications on television stations WOI, Ames, Iowa, KCAU, Sioux City, Iowa and WHBF in Davenport, Iowa.
The results of the survey are the second stage of “The Iowa Project - 1996”, conducted by PSI, which is surveying likely caucus attendees periodically up to the February, 1996, Iowa presidential caucuses. This evenings release is the second in that series. The first was released February 2, 1995.
“ Bob Dole is still the person to beat,” said PSI president and project director Craig Tufty. “He has increased his lead substantially from his 36% showing in January of 1995. The departure of Jack Kemp and Vice President Quayle has given Senator Dole additional strength in an already lopsided campaign in the state of Iowa.”
The PSI Survey of 300 likely caucus attendees, conducted on 3/29/95 and 3/30/95, showed the Republican candidates standing as follows:
| Robert Dole | 50.6% |
| Phil Gramm | 10.4% |
| Pat Buchanan | 5.0% |
| Pete Wilson | 3.0% |
| Colin Powell | 2.3% |
| Arlen Specter | 2.0% |
| Robert Dornan | 2.0% |
| Lamar Alexander | 1.3% |
| Alan Keyes | .3% |
| Richard Lugar | .3% |
| Tommy Thompson | .0% |
| Undecided / Pushed | 2.6% |
| Undecided | 22.7% |
| Total: | 100.0% |
